8 Flawless Foundation Hacks Every Girl Should Know

Whether you use high-end or high-street foundation, there's no denying that sometimes it just doesn't last a full day. No matter how much we put on, or how long we spend blending it in, some days it doesn't look as flawless as it should do.

Here at Pretty52 we've got you covered with some life-changing ways to create an even complexion, conceal dark circles, hide spots, and more.

1. Apply foundation before concealer.

While a concealer helps cover blemishes, dark circles and parts of our face we don't generally like, foundation serves as the base we should build upon. Sometimes, our foundation is thick enough that we might not actually need concealer on the top. This is often why our concealer (particularly under our eyes) might crease after a few hours. Not only should concealer only act as a finishing touch rather than doing all the covering, it'll also save you money and product.

2. Find a primer to suit your skin-type - they're not all the same!

Using a primer that's specific for your skin type will make all the difference when applying your foundation. A good primer serves as a strong base so your foundation isn't sliding, and if you're battling dry patches try a hydrating one.

3. Choose the right foundation consistency for your preferred finish.

Sometimes the wide range our foundations out there can seem a bit daunting, and we don't really know where to start. In general though, there are three kinds of foundation coverage: light, medium and full. It all comes down to the consistency of the product, and what kind of finish you want from your make up. For natural looks, stick to a lightweight foundation; medium coverage would be a little thicker but still a liquid foundation; and for a heavy, full coverage, an opaque finish is best.

4. Don't forget to apply foundation over your eyelids to reduce redness.

The skin on and around our eyelids is generally thinner, so it can suffer from redness. Sweep your foundation brush over your eyelids to combat this, and make them look brighter and more awake.

5. Mix an illuminating formula (or a drop of liquid highlighter) in with your foundation for a subtle glow.

There is nothing worse than someone saying 'Oh, you look tired.' They might as well have just said 'Oh, you look like sh*t today.' If you suffer from dull looking skin but want a healthy glow, then you should mix an illuminating formula (or a drop of liquid highlighter!) in with your foundation. It's as simple as mixing a few drops of the formula and your foundation together on the back of your hand. Blend them together and apply it all over your face.

6. Use a foundation shade with the right undertones for your skin.

Like foundation which has three types of coverage, there are three kinds of skin undertones: warm, cool and neutral. If you have warm undertones, your skin will appear peachy, yellow, or golden. If you have cool undertones, your skin will have a pink, red, or bluish cast to it. If your skin is neutral, then you have a mix of warm and cool tones. The easiest thing to do is to pop to your local make up counter and ask the assistant what would look best with your complexion.

7. Start from the centre of your face and work outward.

This hack leaves you with the most natural finish and makes sure your foundation is perfectly blended. If you started from the outer edges it would create harsh lines around your jawline (hello orange face and white neck!)

8. Use a setting spray.

A setting spray for your foundation makes sure it doesn't budge all day. They're the answer to all your shiny-faced prayers and will be your best friend. The formula helps to set and extend the makeup, giving it a dewy finish and also making it anti-crack, anti-fade and anti-melt.
