Tried And Tested – I Wore Lingerie To Work For A Week And Here’s How It Made Me Feel
Ann Summers is a brand that's all about female sexual empowerment, and they're massive advocates for women "taking the time to wear something they love, even if no one can see it."
So, we decided to put this theory to the test. How did it feel when one of the P52 team cast aside her usual undies and wore Ann Summers lingerie to work for a week?
"I was curious about this challenge because I usually only wear lingerie on dates - I've never really seen lingerie as something I can style for work! But I put myself forward for the challenge because I'm all for anything that makes me feel more together and empowered - especially at this time of year!
Midnight Kiss balcony bra, £30
"For the first day, I chose the Midnight Kiss balcony bra - it comes with matching briefs or thong but to ease myself into the experiment, I started with just the bra. The mint colour of this piece is great, but my favourite bit is the strap detail - especially the pattern at the back. It made me feel confident reaching for a super nice bra on a Monday, rather than my usual soft cup triangle bra. Like I was treating myself how I should be treated. I wore it with a fitted black t-shirt and black jeans, and even before I left the house I felt a bit special - definitely what you need for the first day back at work after the weekend. I had a back to back meetings that day and felt a little bounce going into each one of them.
Tiggie Sleeveless Lace Zip Body - £30, sold in-store only
"Encouraged by my good vibes from the day before, I chose something quite daring for Tuesday: the Tiggie Sleeveless Lace Zip Body, £30 in red - it's just pretty sexy, isn't it? Not that anyone at work was going to see it. But I just felt like I wanted to feel a bit saucy, for myself. I wore it with a really not-typically-sexy loose striped cotton shirt - and felt amazing. I think because I was the only one who knew what I was wearing, but also because it's a one piece, it felt really unusual, and a bit Wonder Woman. I had a spring in my step whenever I left my desk to do something. I did have to curb my liquid intake though because, like a jumpsuit, you have to take the whole thing off to go to the loo. That's the only downside to it though. It also worked as outerwear later, I was having drinks that night so I tied up the shirt so you could see just a hint of the red lace between that and my high waisted jeans. If I was feeling super brave - and it hadn't been January! - I would have worn it alone as a top with the jeans. The bikini line on the Tiggie meant I didn't have to worry about VPL either... bonus.
"On Wednesday I returned to the Midnight Kiss balcony bra again, paired with the matching briefs. But I wore the bra a bit more adventurously this time, with an off the shoulder top to show the straps at the front and the back a little bit. I loved the fact it wasn't super clear whether it was my bra or top. It just felt really good to be wearing something that was different rather than my standard go-to underwear. I'm lucky to work at Pretty 52 where the dress code is casual - but if I needed to be a bit more formal, I would wear a silky shirt or blouse over this bra - despite its detail, the outline it gives is super smooth, which is perfect because I hate that rumply look under a top.
Azealia Body, £60
"The next night, I knew I was going out for drinks that night (Thursday is the new Friday etc) so I decided to go a bit special, with the Azealia Body. It's full body, like the Tiggie, but has a balcony bra shape and cut out detail in the front and sides. It also has contrasting pink and purple lace (which is my favourite bit because I'm really into clashing colours at the moment). I wore it first with a black, long sleeved maxi dress with biker boots, and then jeans again. A couple of times I'd forget what I was wearing underneath my clothes, and then kind of smirk when I remembered. It's like how you feel when you're remembering good news.
"When Friday came around I revisited the Tiggie Sleeveless Lace Zip Body because of how much I loved it the first time. It made me wonder why I've never considered wearing more elaborate underwear to work, when I know how good it makes me feel.
"The verdict? I'm totally sold on the lingerie to work thing. I just felt more bouncy and womanly the whole week. I can't actually believe I've always kept lingerie to date nights and weekends. I'd forgotten how good it makes me feel for me, so I'm going to keep it up!"
