The much-loved dog who played Cheddar in Brooklyn Nine-Nine has died, his owners have confirmed.

Stewart the corgi, 13, who was best known for his role of Captain Holt's (Andre Braugher) sidekick doggo in the sitcom, passed away peacefully in the arms of his owners earlier this week.

The rescue pooch-turned-actor paid a final visit to the beach shortly before the vet put him to sleep "while listening to the sounds of the ocean". I'm not crying, you are.

"My precious Stewart crossed the rainbow bridge today," a statement, shared on Stewart's Instagram account on Tuesday, read.

"We went to the beach (his favourite place) where he frolicked in the surf and then enjoyed a picnic lunch of In & Out burgers. We relaxed in the sun and just enjoyed each other's company."

The post added: "Our veterinarian met us there later and Stewart went to sleep peacefully in my arms while listening to the sounds of the ocean.

"He was a one in a million kind of dog, he was my supaah staah."

Stewart is survived by his sister, Stella, who is also a very talented dog actress.

Tributes have poured in on social media from Brooklyn Nine-Nine fans in Stewart's memory.

"Very sorry for your family loss! Stewart will share his showbiz stories with new friends on the Rainbow Bridge. A new:star2:shines in the night sky," offered one fan.

While another heartbroken follower added: "Rest In Peace Cheddar, B99 won't be the same without you."

Cheddar was undeniably a huge part of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, with the pooch playing ring bearer at Jake (Andy Samberg) and Amy's (Melissa Fumero) wedding.

The four-legged character has been portrayed by a number of different doggos, but Stewart held the role for the longest, Entertainment Weekly reports.

Rest in peace Stewart, you've left a paw print on all of our hearts.
