Netflix is set to release a documentary about the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, but her parents Kate and Gerry have refused to take part.

The documentary, which is already tipped for global success, boasts interviews with key investigators in the 12th anniversary since the three-year-old went missing in Portugal.

Kate and Gerry have reportedly refused to be involved in the film, despite numerous requests from producers over an 18-month period.

The couple's former spokesperson Clarence Mitchell slated the £20 million film, insisting: "We want nothing to do with it."

Last year it was reported they declined to take part in the programme because the Metropolitan Police's case is still active.

"We understand it is a serialised drama but neither Kate, Gerry nor their holiday friends and main players have co-operated in any shape or form," a family friend told the Daily Mail.

"And we have no idea who the actors are. We believe it is coming out very soon, within the next two weeks and before the next anniversary."

A source inside the production team added: "We would have welcomed the opportunity of working with the McCannsdirectly but they informed us they couldn't and wouldn't consider taking part while a police investigation is into their daughter's abduction is ongoing."

It's thought Netflix had hoped the documentary would be ready to screen last year, but production took longer than expected. Producers are said to have initially wanted an eight-part series, but instead it may now be a one or two-parter.

But, Netflix is still hopeful it'll follow in the huge success of other true crime dramas like Abducted In Plain Sight and Making A Murderer.

Madeleine McCann's disappearance became the most high profile missing persons case of all time after she vanished from a holiday apartment in Portugal's Praia da Luz in May 2007.

The three-year-old had been left with her younger siblings while her parents were out for dinner in a tapas restaurant.

Kate and Gerry were made persons of interest by the Portuguese police investigation but this was dropped when the probe was closed in 2008.

The couple have always denied having any involvement in their daughter's disappearance and maintain they will do "whatever it takes, for as long as it takes" to find her.
