Netflix just confirmed a start date for the highly anticipated second season of Mindhunter, and there's not long to wait at all.

The streaming giant revealed the release date on social media on Friday afternoon, and fans of the gritty crime series can expect to be able to binge-watch from Friday, 16th August. Mark your calendars as that's a little over one month to go!

"NEWS: Mindunter S2 is launching August 16 (there wasn't really a "funny", marketing-friendly way to announce that so there you go)," Netflix tweeted.

It's fair to say that fans were ecstatic by the confirmation of an air date from Netflix.

"If it's as good as S1 then we are in for a real treat," declared one on Twitter, while another viewer excitedly exclaimed: "This is fantastic news. I [heart] Season 1. Roll on August 16th."

The news was also confirmed by executive producer David Fincher, while appearing on today's KCRW's The Treatment podcast.

Mindhunter fans were promised a second season of the Netflix original way back in November 2017 so they've paid their dues with patience.

The new episodes landing next months are expected to pick up between 1979 and 1981, two years after the events of season one.

They will focus on the Atlanta child murders; a series of at least 28 killings of African-Americans.

Other characters included in the second season will include notorious serial killers Son of Sam, Charles Manson (Damon Herriman) and Wayne Williams.

Jonathon Groff will be returning as Special Agent Holden Ford as will Holt McCallany as Bill Tench and Anna Torv as psychologist, Dr. Wendy Carr.

Whether Cameron Britton will return as Edward Kemper remains to be seen.

While we wait for season two to drop, you can re-watch season one in its entirety on the subscription streaming platform now.
