Netflix's Abducted In Plain Sight has shocked and bewildered viewers with its heinous true story of the abduction of Jan Broberg, who was kidnapped twice by a family friend and became the subject of extreme manipulation and sexual abuse.

But this isn't the only highly-rated documentary tackling the difficult topic of abduction and abuse. Amazon Prime's Alison is another must-watch programme, this time telling the story of Alison Botha, who was kidnapped, raped and brutally attacked in South Africa in 1994.

Here's the synopsis for the 1-hour 20-minute documentary, directed by filmmaker Uga Carlini: "Raped. Disemboweled. Nearly decapitated. Dumped on the outskirts of a nature reserve, dead - or so they thought. She needed a hero that night, so that's what she became. This is Alison's tale. A tale of monsters, miracles and hope."

Alison Botha was abducted in Noordhoek, Port Elizabeth in 1994 by two men Theuns Kruger and Frans du Toit, who stabbed her in the stomach and throat more than 30 times.

Miraculously, Alison survived the assault and was able to stumble to a roadside nursing her wounds, until she was found.

This 2017 documentary, however, goes on to explore how Alison went on to build a life after the attack.

"The documentary is frank and chilling," a review in the South African Independent Online says. "Yet, it is also surprisingly warm and inspirational. It is not about the attack, it is about Alison the person and how she went on with the life, and how she tries to help other people do the same."

The film currently has a rating of 4.8 out of 5 on Amazon Prime, based on 98 reviews.

Viewer Lucy Anderson said: "What an unbelievably moving story, told by the victim of a terrible crime.

"It got a little graphic at times and I admit I felt quite queasy listening to the gruesome details of her attack but it really painted a vivid picture of what she went through and then to see her come out of it and go on to live a good life and even bare children really inspired me."

Rob Granville Walker added: "Simply the most inspiring docudrama you could ever see... No human being should ever have to face what Alison Botha did.

"If you don't believe in angels then watch this and Alison Botha may make you think again."
