If you've ever wondered why tiny white bumps can magically appear on your arms and legs, then this doctor has the answer...

Doctor George Moncrieff was on This Morning discussing these white bumps that can loads of women can get, and how you can get rid of them.

Apparently, it's quite a common condition and it's called kerstosis pilaris, and it's thought that one in 10 people can get it.

The doctor explained on the ITV chat show that it typically occurs on the upper part of the arm, and occasionally on the fronts of the thighs.

Explaining the condition, he said: "What happens is every hair follicle has its own personal grease gland, and that grease gland produces a bit of oily material that stops water getting down into the skin.

"But if you wash too much, or if you're not making enough grease, and this is an area that you don't get much grease, water can get in, carry bacteria, cause an inflammatory reaction around the hair follicle, which becomes inflamed, and then that causes heaping up of these scales, so it becomes rough and scaly."

Host Ruth Langsford said: "Like little white bumps I get this."

Doctor George continued to explain them condition, adding: "It's simply just due to a keratin reaction to that very low grade folliculitis, due to allowing water to get in down the sides of the shaft of the hair follicule."

He advised you should cut back on detergents, and suggested washing with an emollient instead.

Doctor George also said that you should apply the emollient straight after showering or bathing too, so that you can treat the area more effectively.

He also suggested trying a very gentle chemical peel like salicylic acid which you can buy over the counter and also try to exfoliate the area gently.
