'Aladdin 2': A Sequel To Disney’s Live Action ‘Aladdin’ Is In The Early Stages

It's only been a few weeks since Guy Ritchie's live-action remake of Aladdin secured its place as the second highest-grossing live-action remake in Disney's history (Bill Condon's Beauty and the Beast currently holds the top spot), but producer Dan Lin has already told comicbook.com that the company is already in the early stages of creating sequel.

Oh my Genie!

While nothing is set in stone yet, Lin said: "We certainly, when we first made the movie, wanted to just make the best movie we could and let audiences tell us if they wanted to see more. And I would say resoundingly audiences want to see more."

"We feel like there's more story to tell. We are going to treat it the same way we treat the original Aladdin movie and are not going to do a shot by shot remake of anything that's been done before. We're really just looking at what's been done before in the past and the home video, and there's just more story to tell with the underlying materials."

"So without giving too much away, we are certainly exploring where we can go with this franchise," he added.

Arriving 27 years after the animated original, the live action remake saw Will Smith make his debut as Genie, with breakthrough act Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine.

And while fan enthusiasm as clearly been key to the team's current milling of a sequel - though we doubt the money (over $1 billion) the first movie made wasn't a factor. The first remake was released to mixed reviews, and while Rotten Tomatoes critics only rated it 57 per cent, it got a whopping 94 per cent review from audiences. Critics also praised it for being "lively, colourful and genuinely funny" and "doesn't break what doesn't need fixing from the original."

And would Lin want Guy Ritchie at the helm again?

"I think that's certainly the hope. He made this movie for his kids...so he certainly loved the experience, I think both he and Will Smith - even before the box office success, they said it was the best filmmaking experience of their lives and they had so much fun doing it," he said.

"We'd love to have Guy back and get the team back together. If we do another Aladdin movie, we'd certainly love to have him at the helm."

Guy already has The Gentleman starring Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding and Michelle Dockery set for release next year, but we reckon he should definitely start work on Aladdin 2 after that.
