Sky Scanner has revealed that booking your winter getaway 13 weeks in advance will make sure you get the best price, which means you have more money to spend on mulled wine over the festive period.

So if you wanted to fly out on the 17th December, the best time to book would be around the 17th September, which means you better start looking for your next winter break.

It turns out that last year 3.9 million people travelled abroad in December, which proves just how many of us want to escape the freezing cold winter.

Skyscanner has revealed that the best time to book a holiday for over Christmas is 13 weeks before based on flight booking data from last year.

Despite September being the best time to book, us Brits still love a last minute getaway with 29 per cent of us booking our winter getaways in November and December.

Lisa Tyndall, the senior growth manager at Skyscanner, said: "Looking at our flight data we can see that the best time to book flights for Christmas tends to be 13 weeks in advance... which could save travellers up to 29%."

She added: "Christmas Day has long been believed to be the cheapest day over the festive period [to fly], however, our data is showing the reverse to be true and it is in fact the most expensive day."

Despite Christmas day being rumoured to be the cheapest day to fly, Skyscanner also revealed travelling on 25th December is 24 per cent more expensive than the average price for flights from the UK to all destinations between 16th and 31st December.

The site revealed that Christmas Eve is actually one of the cheapest days to fly over the festive period, with a 19 per cent saving expected compared to the following day.

The top destinations that had a price drop over winter last year were also released and they look pretty promising for a winter break.

The top five locations were Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), St Petersburg (Russia), Penng (Malaysia), Houston (USA) and Reykjavik (Iceland).

Now the summer holidays are over, it's definitely time to start looking at booking our next winter break soon.
