Your iPhone Charging Cable Is Reportedly Changing Again

According to a supply chain blog, Apple is planning to replace the lightning port on its 2019 iPhone with a USB-C similar to the iPad Pro.

Apple is reportedly planning on bringing out a new charging cable when it releases the latest iPhone, according to supply chain blog Macotakara.

The technology giant is supposedly planning to adopt a USB-C charging port for the 2019 iPhone similar to the one released with the latest iPad Pro.

By changing the cable, it would make any of the cables you already own useless if you invested in the new iPhone on its release.

Considering that to buy a new cable costs around £19 direct from Apple, it could be a pretty expensive problem if you lose your charging lead.

Macotakara suggests that Apple could be following rivals Samsung with a switch to a new USB Type-C port.

The blog references to "supply chain sources" and says Apple might make the change to a USB-C port for iPhones next year, after last March's successful Type-C switch for the 2018 iPad Pro.

According to those working on the port, it has not yet reached the reference design stage, meaning it could potentially miss 2019's iPhone release window, forcing Apple to push it back to 2020.

Original iPhone users will remember the original charging port, the 30-pin dock connector, that was launched in 2007.

The port remained for five years but was scrapped when Apple introduced a new Lightning port for charging phones (from the iPhone 5 onward).

So far the lightning port has survived for almost seven years but this latest report may see that change.

iPhone fans weren't too happy with the news and some have taken to social media to let Apple know what they think.

One customer wrote: "Could someone explain why USB-C is important? I have dozen of devices with lightning and only one with USB-C (HP laptop), which I don't take with me on vacation, for example.

"I will still have to carry lightning cable with me for years for 'legacy' Apple products. Why does this hold so much importance?"

Another added: I'm not sure if people are ready for USB-C. I bought one of the new iPad Pros and hated the USB-C connector."
