A raccoon was spotted mourning the loss of its best friend as it lay at the side of the road, after possibly being hit by a vehicle.

In the heartbreaking footage, the raccoon can be seen throwing itself to the floor when it realises its friend has been hit.

The raccoon then slowly stands up and approaches the body of its friend, before staying by its side for a while. It is truly heartbreaking to watch.

The person who caught the touching moment told ViralHog that it looked as though the second raccoon was praying over its friends body.

They said: "I was leaving for work and saw a raccoon praying over his buddies body."

The incident took place on 24 August in Durham, North Carolina, USA, when the person who filmed the footage was on their way to work.

The person filming also provided a commentary on the events unfolding in front of him, he said: "Look at him trying to go get her up. He trying to go get her up now.

"Oh my god he trying to get her up this is so sad. I want to cry."

Many YouTubers commented on the video paying their respects to the two animals.

One wrote: "I would give my life for this raccoon. If you're reading this raccoon, just know I love you."

This isn't the first heartbreaking death of an animal we have witnessed, as a one-year-old alpaca recently died after a unknown motorist dumped a bag of Doritos in his enclosure.

The alpaca suffered a horrendous 36-hours of pain before developing blood poisoning after eating the crisps, peanuts and cheese nips dumped in the field by the driver.

Creekside Animal Hospital in Fleming Island, Florida broke the news on its Facebook page. "It is with a heavy heart that we want to inform our clients and friends at the elementary school that our youngest alpaca that was born out on the shared field over a year ago has passed away," read the post.

"We have had a problem with a gentlemen in a blue car constantly dumping inappropriate food into the field several times per week. We have spoken to him on at least four different occasions.

Creekside added that it didn't think the man's actions meant 'true harm', but explained: "Now an alpaca is dead from his actions."
