FDA Approved New Drug To Help With Pain Of Endometriosis

For some women, learning to live with the pain that their endometriosis brings is just a way of life.

While there is still no cure for the painful disorder which can cause tissue to grow outside of the uterus, a new drug has just been FDA-approved to help women suffering from endometriosis.

The pain can often be debilitating, and it's believed that around one in ten suffer from the condition, meaning this could massively help millions of women around the globe.

Elagolix is an oral treatment and can help with the ranging levels of pain that comes hand in hand with endometriosis.

Lead doctor of the Elagolix drug trials at Yale Medical School, Hugh Taylor, said: "This [medication] could really be transformative.

"I'm very excited to be able to start using it in my patients."

Up until now, women have often been prescribed birth control or generic painkillers to help deal with the symptoms of endometriosis, so this drug could literally be life changing for so many women.

This brand new drug works by lowering oestrogen levels in the body - one of the main factors causing endometriosis. The trials involved 1,200 women with the condition, who were asked to rank the pain that they experienced on a scale marked one to three.

The average result came back as 2.3 before the trials started, and after participants took the drug for three months, this figure was lowed to 0.3.

It's important to stress that this drug isn't a cure for endometriosis, but if these trials are anything to go by, it could massively help with the pain that it causes.

There are some side effects though, as it can cause bone loss, and as the trials only lasted a year, any side effects past that point are completely unknown.

It's unclear how much the drug will cost or whether it will be available here in the UK just yet.
