UK shoppers have officially begun the countdown to Black Friday, but what actually is the American shopping tradition that's sweeping the nation?

Black Friday is a shopping tradition from the US, in which retailers dramatically lower their prices, the day after thanksgiving. This year, it falls on Friday 23rd November,

No one really knows why it's called Black Friday, however there is a theory that retailers note all their profits in black and losses in red, so it could be a nod to all the money they make during the sales. Or, it could be because the sale day is infamous for people scrapping in supermarkets over flat screen TVs... but hopefully not.

Some retailers have already started advertising its Black Friday deals, including Superdrug, who is already offering huge discounts to those who hold Superdrug Health and Beauty cards.

Deals include the L'Oreal Paradise Mascara Kit for just £9.99 for card holders, where it would cost £19.99 for non-members. Card holders can also get their hands on this Revolution Makeup Gift Set 12 Days Of Christmas Box for just £30, where non-members would have to pay £40.

Another retailer to keep an eye on is Argos, who in recent years have offered huge sales on toys and tech and electronics like laptops and TVs.

Although the high street retailer is keeping tight-lipped on its sales at the moment, the website reads: "Oh man, Black Friday is going to be amazing this year. We're so excited. We'd tell you all about our deals, but we can't right now- it's totally hush- hush, top secret."

Last year, the retailer saw 53 million visits to its site between 9pm and 10pm on Thursday 24th November, when bosses launched its sale three hours earlier than anticipated.

Popular items in the sale included children's toys in the run up to Christmas, along with gaming consoles, video games, tablets and smart audio products, so we know where we'll be heading to stock up on the Chrimbo presents.

The sales will launch from just gone midnight on Friday 16th November until midnight on Sunday 25th November, just before Cyber Monday.

Amazon will also bring back its Home of Black Friday pop up shop in London from 22nd to 25th November, where consumers will be offered a host of exclusive deals, workshops and VIP experiences.

If you prefer to do your Black Friday shopping in store, then John Lewis is definitely worth a visit as last year discounted items ranged from cosmetics to technology such as TVs and video game consoles The sales also included well known brands like Liz Earle, LG and even Google Home.

John Lewis will also host huge discounts on its website, which was at its busiest between 7am and 8am last year, so it looks like you'll have to set that alarm if you want to get onto the best deals.

We'd predict Tesco stores will be pretty hectic when it comes to Black Friday sales, particularly after the closure of the Tesco Direct online site. It's thought that Tesco's sale items will predominantly focus about clothing and electrical items.
