Over the last few years, the competition to create the most heartwarming Christmas advert has got more competitive than ever before. And while John Lewis usually steal the crown, they've got strong competition this year from Sainsbury's who just released their tearjerking ad.

The idea for the advert is pretty simple, it's based around a school Christmas show and sees a talented eight-year-old star performing an amazing version of New Radicals' 'You Get What You Give'.

While she performs her heart out, the curtain opens to reveal 60 more adorable kids from across the country who have dressed up as everything from a turkey to a camel.

However the big moment has to be when 10-year-old Harrison, dressed as a plug, takes a leap and perfectly lands in the plug socket.

What makes the show even more heartwarming is that the audience is made up of the children's families so the proud smiles are all genuine.

A behind the scenes look at the advert has also been released which is just as adorable and festive.

The advert was directed by The Greatest Showman's Director, Michael Gracey, and the spirit of the holiday season under the tagline "we give all we've got for the ones we love".

Gracey said: "We set out to craft an ad that embodies the joy and imagination of the festive season.

"We hope it's a message that resonates with people from all walks of life this Christmas."

Social media users have already claimed the advert made them emotional and praised Harrison's portrayal of a plug.

One user wrote: "Absolutely brilliant. Love everything about it. So much to see in it. The Queen was ace, and as for the plug- genius. Christmas is a lot about kids and you Sainsbury's have nailed it. All those kids are marvellous [sic]."

Another added: "Love this - the girl jumping into the plug socket closely followed by the bauble costume are my favourite."

However, since the advert was released, there have been some comparisons to John Lewis and Waitrose's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' advert released earlier this year.

But Sainsbury's has already addressed any potential comparisons. Speaking to Metro Laura Boothby, head of broadcast marketing at Sainsbury's, said: "We started work on this in January and the thing we were really inspired about is every single school up and down the country is doing a nativity play.

"That's really what this is about. I don't think you question it's from Sainsbury's. We've got black and white at the beginning, there's orange all the way through, so I'm not worried about it.

"What we've created is a really lovely piece of festive joy and I think that's how people will view it."

If you really love the festive rendition of 'You Get What You Give' it is available to stream on Spotify.
