Lidl Launches Mini Trolleys For Children To UK Stores

After a successful trial period, the supermarket is rolling out the scheme to more that 250 of its stores in the UK.

Lidl is introducing mini children's trolleys to its UK stores so that the little ones can join in with the trolley-bashing in the bargain aisles.

Kids will be now able to help their families as they do their food shop at the affordable supermarket.

The 'Fun Size Trolleys' were introduced to a number of Lidl stores during a trial, but now the supermarket is rolling them out across more than 250 stores here in the UK.

You'll be able to find the new additions in a special nine-trolley bay - no money is needed to make them work, unlike most supermarket trolleys which require a pound coin or similar token.

While it might be cute to see your mini-me doing their weekly food shop, Lidl actually hopes the trolleys will have an important influence.

The supermarket believes the little trolleys will help children to become more involved in doing the food shop and think about healthy eating.

Ryan McDonnell, commercial director of Lidl UK, said: "We're constantly looking for new ways to make shopping more fun and engaging for kids.

"We're keen to help parents build their children's understanding of what they eat, and we hope that our new Fun Size Trolleys will encourage kids to play a bigger part in the family shop."

The supermarket says that all of the kids' trolleys will be in-store by the end of the month.

Lidl isn't the only supermarket giant to opt for children's trolleys, as a similar scheme is already in place at 60 Morrisons stores.

Earlier this year, Lidl was praised for its getting rid of all black plastic from fruit and vegetable packaging.

Speaking at the time, McDonnell said: "This significant move away from black plastic demonstrates our dedication to tackling this important topic. We recognise the current challenge that black plastic presents to the recycling industry, which is why we have made it our priority to remove it from our fresh ranges.

"As part of our commitment to achieving our ambitious targets, we are continually exploring opportunities to cut our packaging, and where packaging is necessary to protect food and minimise food waste, we will ensure that it is reusable, refillable or recyclable."
