Prince George was reportedly taken grouse hunting for the first time by the royal family over the weekend, but Twitter isn't happy to say the least.

The five-year-old royal was said to have been joined by his parents, Prince William and Kate Middleton, as well as his younger brother and sister, Princess Charlotte and Louis, in Balmoral, Scotland, now that it is hunting season.

It's also believed that the Queen and Prince Charles, and lots of other royals were there too.

But while grouse shooting has been a norm in the royal family for years, hordes of social media users still aren't happy with it, and have slammed their weekend away.

"Prince William, in October of last year, made a speech warning us that "global wildlife populations have halved in his lifetime." Today, we learn he took his son, Prince George, on his first grouse shoot," fumed one person on Twitter.

While another vented: "I just saw that Prince George has been taken to his first grouse shoot, all in the name of 'Sport'. Such a shame that another innocent child will grow up to believe that killing animals for fun will be the normal thing to do."

"We should be teaching children about kindness and compassion, not killing and cruelty," ranted another, and a fourth declared: "This disappoints me so much - what right do they have to criticise trophy hunting abroad whilst still continuing this in the UK?"

While tweets continued to pour in on social media criticising the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for reportedly taking their son grouse shooting, others pointed out that some people may have been a little 'hypocritical' with their words.

"So Prince George has been taken to a Grouse shoot and people are outraged. Odds on many of the same folk eat meat. Far better to kill and eat a bird raised in the wild, shot with no knowledge of what's coming than eat a factory farmed chicken/pig. Misplaced outrage in my opinion," tweeted one person.

The sport usually takes place in the north of England and Scotland. Balmoral Castle is one of the Queen's favourite places to stay in the summer, and the royal family has a long tradition of grouse hunting.
