Coronation Street actor Simon Gregson is famed for portraying comical barman Steve McDonald on the cobbles, and has been a fan favourite since he first appeared on screens in 1989.

And now, Simon and wife Emma have just opened about 12 devastating miscarriages, as well as a ruptured ectopic pregnancy that could have killed the mum-of-three back in September. She originally thought her stomach pains were caused by constipation, but found herself needing emergency surgery in hospital to save her life.

Speaking to OK! Magazine, Emma explained: "Up to that point we didn't know I was pregnant so it came as a double blow to us. It was hard to get our heads around what was happening.

"I was petrified. I thought I was never going to see my sons ever again."

She continued: "As they were taking me down to theatre I just kept thinking, I'm going to die - this is it, I'm not going to make it."

Adding to his wife's words, Simon recalled: "They told me Emma would've died if it had been left for a few more hours. She was literally two hours away from death."

The married couple, who wed in 2010, hope that their experience will help others to learn more about the signs of an ectopic pregnancy, and raise awareness of the condition.

Emma said: "The stigma has been removed from having miscarriages, but ectopic pregnancy isn't discussed enough - I didn't really know anything about it. The more you talk, the more you can help other people and spot the signs. It's such a dangerous condition."

The parents, who share Alfie, ten, Harry, eight, and Henry Teddy, two, have made the decision to not have any more children, and Simon will soon undergo a vasectomy.
