Selena Gomez 'has entered a mental health facility after suffering an emotional breakdown while in hospital', according to a number of US sources.

People reports that the popstar was hospitalised twice in the last few weeks over side effects caused by her kidney transplant in the summer of 2017.

Both hospitalisations are thought to be over a low white blood cell count, known as leukopenia, and can be common for those with Lupus - a condition Selena suffers from.

Reports suggest Selena had a panic attack during her second visit to Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles.

"She has had a tough few weeks and the panic attack in the hospital was the tipping point," a source said.

"She realised she needed to seek additional help for her ongoing emotional issues. She's surrounded by close family and has a lot of support. She's doing better now and is seeking treatment on the East Coast."

TMZ reports that the 'Wolves' singer's second hospitalisation threw the music artist into a 'downward emotional spiral', and when doctors wouldn't let her go home she suffered an 'emotional breakdown'.

Selena is now said to being treated at a mental health facility, and is receiving dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT).

The therapy is a type of talking treatment based on cognitive behavioural therapy, and focuses on improving communication and mindfulness as well as developing skills to be able to positively deal with emotional ups and downs.

The treatment was first developed for patients with borderline personality disorder, but it's now more commonly used to treat conditions such as depression.

Selena was admitted to rehab in 2014, where she received the same treatment. The star previously said DBT had 'completely changed her life'.

She also completed a two-week long treatment programme in NYC for anxiety and depression earlier this year.

A different source told E! News that Selena had been working hard to remain focused and not let her health affect her.

They said: "She has been actively writing new music, and moved to Orange County for a change of pace and a fresh breath of air. Ultimately, with all of her arising health issues, Selena started to feel super overwhelmed."
