Lady Gaga surprised a Red Cross wild fire evacuation shelter in Los Angeles yesterday with several boxes of pizza and a special performance.

The singer visited the centre on World Kindness Day after thousands of California residents were evacuated due to a wild fire that has been tearing through the area since last week.

Taking to Instagram, the star who was also evacuated from her home on Friday documented her journey to the shelter and thanked the Red Cross for their hard work.

She said: "Today is my favourite day of the year-it's World Kindness Day. I encourage you all to do one act of kindness even if it's for yourself.

"I'm on my way now to a shelter in California to be with people who have evacuated their homes. It's one of my acts of kindness for today and I encourage you to do the same. Be kind."

Lady Gaga turned up at the Red Cross shelter at Pacific Palisades High School in Los Angeles.

The "Camp Fire" blaze has claimed 48 lives, with 200 people still unaccounted for.

As well as claiming 48 lives, the "Camp Fire" in Northern California has scorched 130,000 acres and is currently 35 percent contained.

The "Woolsey Fire" in Los Angeles has burned 97,114 acres and is 40 percent contained with two fatalities confirmed.

Thousands of people's homes have been destroyed, including Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth's Malibu home.

Taking to Instagram, Liam wrote: "It's been a heartbreaking few days. This is what's left of my house. Love. Many people in Malibu and surrounding areas in California have lost their homes also and my heart goes out to everyone who was affected by these fires.

"I spent the day in Malibu yesterday and it was amazing to see the community pulling together to help each other out in any way they can."

After losing their home the couple have given $500,000 (£385,000) to the Woolsey fire relief efforts.
