John Legend has given a telling insight into the mum-shaming his wife Chrissy Teigen received after the birth of their daughter, Luna.

Speaking to Romper, John revealed that when the couple enjoyed their first date night after Luna's birth in 2016, Chrissy was trolled for daring to leave the house - but no one said a word to him.

"People were shaming Chrissy for leaving the house, and didn't say anything bad to me," he told the publication.

"Look, we're both parents and we're both going out. If you think that's not appropriate - and first of all, you shouldn't think that's not appropriate - if you're going to blame somebody, blame both of us, not just the mother."

John's words provide a fascinating insight into the double standards of motherhood and fatherhood, and how unfairly people judge a mum's choices - even those as simple as going out for dinner - while dads are unlikely to experience such criticism.

This isn't the first time John has spoken about the mum-shaming and trolling Chrissy has experienced. In 2016, after seeing some of the criticism that had been levelled at his wife, John took to Twitter to write: "Funny there's no dad-shaming. When both of us go out to dinner, shame both of us so Chrissy doesn't have to take it all. We'll split it."

Chrissy has long been one of our favourite Twitter users, always ready with an excellent comeback to people who question everything about her, from her fertility to her decision to swear on social media.

She's also tweeted about how judgemental people can be from behind a screen, writing about those criticising her decision to dare to go out for dinner: "i never wanted to leave my daughter, i love her, BUT THAT'S JUST ME" - the passive aggressiveness is real!".

While we're massive fans of both John and Chrissy and their on-point responses to public shamers, it would just be better off in our humble opinion if trolls could keep their ill-informed opinions to themselves. Being a new mum - or a new dad - is hard enough without being shamed just for going out for dinner.
