John Bishop gave a powerful and important speech on The Jonathan Ross Show last week encouraging parents to embrace gay children 'for who they are'.

The comedian praised his son who came out in 2011, and asked parents to allow their own children to 'feel safe'.

The star, who has three sons with wife Melanie, has not identified which of his sons came out but it is believed he was in his teenage years when he did so.

John was awarded Straight Ally of the Year at the LGBT awards in May this year, and joked that having a gay son was 'just like having a son'. He said: "Of the top 10 things I even think about him, being gay is not even on there. He's just another son."

He continued on a more serious note and added: "To the kids who are 10 and 11 in the playground, who are standing on their own, who don't know where they belong or what group they belong into and try to play up to something or feel isolated.

"And to their parents who think 'I don't know, my son doesn't want to play football, he doesn't fit in', say 'It's OK'.

"Just love them for who they are and allow them to feel safe, and then those little digs and the little knocks and the little abuse that they subtly get that we don't know about, perhaps won't penetrate as deep."

After giving his inspiring speech the audience broke into a round of applause and fellow guests The Spice Girls and Kylie Minogue nodded along with the 51-year-old.

John is no stranger to emotional speeches on LGBT issues as when accepting his Straight All of the Year award he gave an honest speech about his son.

He said: "Like all parents we have problems with them. One of my sons has a tattoo on his ankle that was meant to be Africa but looks like Australia, one of my sons mumbles and one of my sons is a gay man.

"I'll be honest, there's been loads of nights when me and my wife have sat up and worried and worried and worried. What are we going to do if he doesn't stop mumbling?"

John added: "I love all my sons to bits. We have all had a brilliant night. It has been such a great experience for all the family.

"My other two sons have been loving the attention, telling everyone they are the gay one."
