Editor's Note: It has now been revealed that Rebekah Shelton was the victim of a cruel hoax. Her Twitter account falsely said that she had passed away 'unexpectedly' but she is, in fact, safe and well.

Big Brother star Rebekah Shelton has died unexpectedly aged just 32.

The transgender reality star, who rose to fame on back in the 2009 series, passed away on Wednesday. She originally appeared on Big Brother pre-transition as Rodrigo Lopes.

Her passing was announced on Twitter early on Friday morning, and the tweet read: "We're sorry to inform everyone of the sad news that our wonderful and lovely Rebekah died unexpectedly on Wednesday night.

"We ask that you respect the family's privacy at this time."

Hundreds of grieving fans have all rallied round to show their support for the family of the Big Brother 'icon' and posted heartfelt tributes on social media.

"No way I remember when she was on Big Brother before her transition and I and she was one of my favourite ever people to have ever entered the big brother house and I've watch her transformation during the years it's so sad rest in peace," posted one shocked fan.

As a second added: "God, how awful! I'm so sorry. I remember watching her on Big Brother a few years ago and I loved her personality. And she achieved so much through her transition. </3 Sending all my love to her family and friends. This is heartbreaking."

"This is so awful one of the loveliest girls ever. Beautiful inside and out. Rest in peace Rebekah xxx," wrote another heartbroken fan.

As a fourth tweeted: "Such sad news. Absolutely heartbroken. Sleep tight Rebekah."

"This is such sad news. So very sorry to hear. My love, thoughts, prayers and hugs are with you all. Xxx," commented a final saddened Twitter user.

Heartbroken comments have continued to pour in on social media since the news was announced.
