There's a magical little town in Holland where the streets are made up of water, and it's like something straight out of Disney film.

Giethoorn in northern Holland is like a fairytale's dream as the enchanted neighbourhood is built upon a network of narrow canals.

According to Giethoorn's website, "the loudest sound you can normally hear is the quacking of a duck or the noise made by other birds." Dreamy.

Kris, who runs the Giethoorn Instagram account, told Pretty52: "Like in every tourist place, the centre of Giethoorn is somewhat busier from April to September.

"Outside the tourist centre there are still real spots where you can hear the birds croaking and immerse yourself in nature."

Despite its picturesque setting, Giethoorn isn't actually as remote as you might think - as it's fairly accessible by car from Amsterdam, and hosts a number of little B&Bs meaning it could be the perfect destination for a relaxing getaway.

The website explains: "Giethoorn's name originates from the first inhabitants' discovery of hundreds of goat horns (gietehorens) in the marshland, remnants of a 10th-century flood.

"Today no goat horns will be found here, but the vegetation is quite distinct still. Here you will find yourself on the edge of vast series of lakes and canals, ideal for boaties, angling and paddle-cycling."

The best way to see Giethoorn is to travel by canal boat, which sounds like the perfect way to spend a long weekend away from the hustle and bustle.
