Man Opens Twitter Debate On Read Receipts Politics After Date Asks Him To Turn Them On

Dating must have been far less complicated back in the day, when you'd ring someone's landline, arrange to meet them at the nearest pub, and just hope they show up at the designated time.

In 2019, not only can you text (which becomes another maze to navigate altogether), you can actually see if someone is ignoring you if they have 'read receipts' switched on, which naturally adds a whole other level of insecurity.

You'd hardly expect anyone to actually want you to turn them for that very reason, but this is exactly the strange request one man had after a date.

Eric Dimitratos, a digital director from New York, had just been on a first date and was feeling anxious that the guy might ghost him. But far from that, the unnamed date actually requested he turn on his read receipts, so he could keep tabs on when Eric had seen his messages.

Posting screenshots of the exchange on Twitter, the date asks Eric "Can you do me a favor? (sic)," to which the New Yorker replies "Yeah, what do you need?" At this point, the date gives Eric instructions on how to turn on his read receipts.

*Goes on first date, scared he'll ghost but instead gets this text* read the director's caption alongside the screen grabs.

The tweet - which has since had over 1200 likes and 14,000 retweets - made way for a ton of debate on the subject of read receipts and privacy in dating, with the overriding advice to Eric being RUN IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION.

"So ... you're not gonna do that, right? Because if there was a time for ghosting someone ELSE, this is it," said one Twitter user.

"Yet we all had to BEG you to stop talking to him," said another.

"Would've blocked him right then. Nobody needs that neurotic energy around," suggested a third.

"If someone I'd been on one date with did that, I would turn on read receipts, tell them so, read their acknowledgement, and then ghost them forever," said another.

Others mused on on whether read receipts are ever acceptable, with one man saying he doesn't even have them turned on for his partner: "I have read receipts off even for my spouse's messages. NO ONE has need to see a read receipt," he said.

"I ONLY turn read receipts for ppl that need to know I'm ignoring them," shared another.

For another Twitter user, the issue was slightly more complicated. (Getting the genders wrong), he asked: "So he's asking her to turn it on so he can see that she's read his texts? So he's scared she'll ghost him? If they're both scared the other will ghost them, doesn't that mean they like each other?.... Sorry I'm stupid and confused."

Another responded saying: "It's the privacy element though. There's a middle-ground between 'not replying to any messages after the first date' and 'must know exactly when they've read your messages', and that middle-ground is, like, where normal relationships are."

We have to say we totally agree. Now can be ban read receipts forever please?
