Territorio de Zaguates Costa Rica or 'Land of the Strays' is a Costa Rican paradise for more than 900 stray and abandoned dogs.

Dogs that may have been put down at shelters are housed there temporarily while they wait for new owners to come along, and it also acts as a longer-term solution for dogs that can't find new owners.

The best part is that the sanctuary is open to the public so if you are interested in adopting or just want to spend the day with hundreds of dogs, you can! Someone get me a plane ticket.

The pooches who have been abandoned through no fault of their own are left in the care of the dedicated team at Land of the Strays.

According to its mission statement, Territorio de Zaguates is a "No-Kill Shelter", for more than 1,000 wagging tails, where staff do not believe in euthanasia as a solution to the problem of abandoned dogs in Costa Rica.

"Our mission is to find a home for all the dogs that are in our care. We are a temporary home for hundreds of puppies looking for a second chance, and we are also the permanent home of many others who may never find their own family."

The sanctuary was founded in 2006 by couple Lya Battle and Alvaro Saumet, who are dedicated to promoting animal welfare and respect for animals.

The sanctuary's main goals are to 'rescue and improve the quality of life of street dogs', 'promote the adoption of animals' and to 'reduce the number of stray dogs on the streets by spaying and neutering all dogs they rescue, and raise awareness about responsible pet ownership and care'.

Closer to home, charity worker Nicole Bottomley has arguably one of the best jobs, as she delivers guide dogs for a living.

The 58-year-old from Morton Morrel, Warwickshire, is part of Guide Dogs UK's specialist team that helps welcome 1,400 bundles of fluff into the world every year.

Nicole has been at the charity ever since she was 18-years-old, and always knew she wanted to work with guide dogs, after seeing them in training at the Guide Dogs' National Breeding Centre in Leamington Spa when she was much younger.

"Even when I was at school, I knew I wanted to work with them," Nicole explained. "There weren't any vacancies at that point though, so I worked for a short while at a veterinary practice, before progressing to Guide Dogs UK, where I have been ever since."
