A police officer has made a devastating plea to the public, after witnessing the tragic death of a three-year-old child who went into cardiac arrest.

PC Jade Hunter from West Yorkshire Police took to Twitter to urge the public to think twice about when they see police officers 'skiving' or taking a break in local coffee shops, and consider what they may have just had to deal with.

"Last night myself and five colleagues attended a report of a three-year-old female in cardiac arrest. Ambulance were already on the scene and I cannot praise them enough for their amazing efforts and professionalism at such a difficult time. Unfortunately she didn't make it and my heart and deepest sympathies go out to her family and friends," she wrote in the heartbreaking message.

"Jobs like this are especially difficult to deal with, I cannot imagine the pain her parents and siblings are going through now. Being a police officer is not all about catching criminals and this is a side of the job many people don't realise we do."

She continued: "So next time you pull up at a local coffee shop or fast food restaurant and see a couple of police cars, please don't post on social media that we're 'having a tea break' or 'skiving'. You never know what kind of situation we have just attended or dealt with, sometimes we need 5 or 10 minutes to gather our thoughts."

Jade finished her message by insisting that the public's safety is always their number one priority while reminding the public that they're often straight back out there dealing with the next situation that comes in.

She ended the powerful message: "However, we're only human too. Please don't penalise us for having feelings."

After sharing the post, Jade was inundated with messages of support from people grateful for all the work our police officers do.

"Jade, I'm so sorry - but a big thank you to you and your colleagues for all the hard work you do protecting and helping us all out 24 hours a day 365 days a year. I really do appreciate the work you all do and I'm thankful! People like me look up to you. Thank you again," one person responded.

Another added: "Totally agree, sometimes public are not understanding enough of the fact police are human too, I often see police queuing for food but doesn't bother me. You deserve a break."
