Mums Claim Cabbage Leaves Can Help Soothe Sore Breasts

Breastfeeding your baby is a beautiful thing, but for lots of new mamas, nursing can leave you with sore and painful breasts on a regular basis.

But one completely natural trick has gone viral for its abilities to help soothe breasts after feeding your baby.

According to loads of mums, putting cabbage leaves straight from the fridge onto your chest (basically like a bra) can give you instant relief for engorged and painful boobs.

You can use either green or red cabbage, but the latter can sometimes end up staining your clothes, so maybe just stick with green, and make sure it is really clean.

Many suggest keeping the cabbage off your nipples though, so they stay dry.

It's not just an old wives' tale either, as the National Institutes of Health found: "Cabbage leaf treatment used on women with breast engorgement did reduce pain, the hardness of the engorged breasts and increased the duration of breast feeding.

"The current available evidence suggests that cabbage leaf treatment helps reduce pain in breast engorgement and lengthens breastfeeding duration."

Researchers aren't exactly sure why cabbage can help decrease the pain of engorged breasts. It could be because of a properly inside cabbage or maybe down to the cabbage acting as a cool compress.

Some claim that cabbage leaves can also draw out any excess fluid, although this is not scientifically proven.

This isn't the only thing that cabbage can be used for, as some women claim that using it the same way can help reduce milk supply when you begin weaning your baba.

And if you've finished nursing your baby for good, putting cabbage leaves over your boobs can supposedly help dry up your milk flow.
