A family from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, will finally be reunited with their 'missing' cat, after accidentally mailing him to Montreal.

Baloo, a one-year-old tabby cat miraculously survived a 17-hour trip across 1,200 kilometres after crawling into a parcel that was then shipped by his family.

The four-legged friend's owner, Jackie Lake says Baloo nestled into the box containing spare tyre rims she was sending to a friend.

"The cat never made a sound, I'm telling you - he was in stealth mode," she said in an interview on Canadian television.

A day after sending the parcel, Jackie noticed Baloo was missing, prompting her three children to spend the whole weekend hanging 'missing' posters and knocking on doors in the neighbourhood to see if anyone had spotted their kitty.

Believing Baloo had just gone outside, Jackie got quite the shock when she got a phone call to say he'd been discovered 1,200 kilometres away in Montreal.

"I mailed a cat!" Jackie said in disbelief. "I literally started bawling and screaming into the phone, 'Did I kill my cat?'"

Luckily, Baloo was in good health despite his long journey after being looked after by the local SPCA who 'treated him like royalty,' and even microchipped him for free to make sure his family can easily be found if he decides to take another trip.

Anita Kapuscinska, communications director for the Montreal SPCA, was thankful the story came to a happy ending.

"You could imagine their surprise when they received the call confirming that their missing cat was alive and well in Montreal," she said.

A very grateful Jackie said: "I'm so glad that he's okay, and everybody worked so hard to get him back to me."

She revealed her kids are especially excited to be reunited with their feline friend, adding: "Although they'll never let me live this down."
