BBC Hospital viewers were left devastated when Thursday night's episode ended in a newborn baby dying just hours after birth.

Lauren was admitted to Liverpool Women's Hospital at 33 weeks ready to give birth to twin boys, Bobby and Albi.

While Bobby was perfectly healthy, doctors discovered that his twin brother Albi had a fatal illness called anencephaly, which meant the top of his skull had not properly developed.

Speaking to the camera, Lauren said: "I had my scan at 13 weeks and I'd just got my head around the fact I was having twins...

"Then I found out that Albi had a fatal condition...and I was just devastated."

Viewers were then told the heartbreaking news that Albi wouldn't survive for long after birth.

Lauren's mum, Debbie said: "It's been hard because it's like watching my little girl go through it, it's like a crash waiting to happen."

Twenty-seven-year-old Lauren and her fiancé Gary planned to donate Albi's liver cells to help people with liver failure and heart valves to help children with cardiac conditions.

However, when Lauren began to experience more and more pain, her consultant decided to bring her cesarean date forward, which meant Albi could be too young and small to donate his heart valves and liver cells.

This meant Lauren and Gary were forced to make a horrendously difficult decision as they balanced the wishes of wanting to donate against the health and welfare of Lauren and Bobby.

After going ahead with the early C-section, they were unfortunately unable to make the donations as Albi didn't meet the weight requirement.

Viewers took to Twitter to share their heartbreak for Lauren and Gary, when Albi died just two and a half hours after birth.

Heartbreaking.
