The three most popular baby names this year were Sophia, Olivia and Emma for girls and Jackson, Liam and Noah for boys, according to the parenting website Babycentre.

The research was based on data from more than 742,00 parents who shared what they had called their babies born in 2018.

Whether the trend for these names continues next year remains to be seen, but Babycentre has put together a list of predictions for 2019. So if you're looking for inspiration, read on.

Cartoons

An increasing number of parents are turning to cartoons to name their children, according to the website. After Peter Rabbit made it to the big screen this year, there was a rise in Peters and next year we may see more names like Jemima and Beatrix.

Considering Frozen was a huge hit in 2016, it's unsurprising that Anna and Elsa have become more popular - and may continue to do so as the sequel comes out next year.

Parents may also turn to newer animations such as Paw Patrol's Ryder, Chase, Marshall and Rocky, which have become more common this year too.

TV shows

Aria/Arya became more popular this year after the rise of Game of Thrones and Babycentre predicts Sansa, Tyrion, Jon and Dany will feature on the charts next year. Eve, after Killing Eve, is likely to do well, as well as Oksana.

Parents may also go for Julia and David, after this year's hit series The Bodyguard.

1970s

We've seen a rise in popularity of old-fashioned names, such as Alfie and Rose. Next year may see the return of names popular in the 1970s, such as Susan and Christine. Brian, Barry and Patricia appeared more in 2018.

Holidays

Destination names are becoming more common, such as India, Israel, Dallas and Cairo.
