Birthdays are days to be surrounded by people that you love, but sadly that can't be the case for everyone.

Luckily for us, social media has meant that while we might be alone physically, there's a ton of people ready to offer support when we need it. And one woman had a sweet reminder of this when she tweeted about feeling lonely ahead of her birthday.

Sarah Hammond tweeted that she was "struggling" the day before her birthday and "not looking forward to the day" as her father had passed away and her mother has dementia so "won't remember". The only company Sarah had was her young daughter.

The mother asked Twitter for "kind wishes" or a like, but hardly expected what was to come.

Since posting, Sarah has received over 2.6 thousand replies wishing her a happy birthday and offering messages of support.

"You're really lucky to have your daughter. I'm sorry about your mum and dad. Happy birthday and Make sure you give yourself a treat," one person wrote.

"Happy Birthday Sarah. Somewhere, deep within her, your mum will remember," another person shared.

"Have the best day, you deserve it. Remember time is the best healer, you just have to allow it the time to work," another penned.

Everyone from Cats Protection to ITV has chimed in to wish Sarah a happy birthday.

Recipe video platform, Tastemade, even made a cake for Sarah, saying: "You're a star".

See? There is kindness in strangers, and the messages meant so much to Sarah she took to Twitter once more to thank all of her newfound friends.

Sarah said of the messages: "Some have bought a tear to my eye, many have made me smile. My spirt is already lifted."
