There Are Four Different Types Of Drinker According To Science

According to science there are four different types of wine drinkers which relate to the way which you drink and taste wine and what your typical choice of vino may be.

Now when we say different types of drinkers we aren't talking about those who drink to be social, those who drink till they're on the floor or those who choose not to drink at all it is all about your wine drinking preference.

There are four different types of 'vinotypes' according to Michigan State University, which sounds pretty fancy but they are quite simple to understand.

Those who fit into the sweet category are apparently very picky about their wines along with most other things in their lives, say researchers. They know that they want something sweet, light, and not too strong. It also turns out that 70 per cent of these drinkers are women and they typically love soda, and excess salt.

If you are hypersensitive you are similar to the picky, sweet category, but with a slightly more open mind about exploring new wines as long as they're simple and clean. Researchers say these people are most likely to complain about TV volume and thermostat temperature (pretty sure we all know someone like this).

Bang in the middle of the wine-drinking spectrum is the sensitive wine drinker who is flexible and adventurous. Good news if you are in the sensitive category as the researchers say these people will also tend to display signs of being free-spirited and less rigid in everyday life.

Then there are the 'show offs', the tolerant drinkers. People in this category demand intensity from their wines, big bold flavours, and just don't get how others like drinking 'wimpy' wines. They are decisive and more linear thinkers. Their wine preferences point to rich, very intensely flavoured whites and full-bodied reds. People who like strong coffee and cheese gravitated towards these wines in the tests.

To come up with the results researchers surveyed a group of adults on their food and drink preferences as well as looking at their consumption patterns.

Participants were also invited to a food and wine reception where they were asked to rate snacks and wine individually before then rating them together.

The researchers were able to predict wine preferences based on the data gathered about their eating, drinking and other personal habits.

Lead author of the study, former chef and restaurant manager Carl Borchgrevink, said customers should drink their favourite wines instead of those suggested by a sommelier.

He said: "The palate rules - not someone else's idea of which wine we should drink with our food.

"They shouldn't try to intimidate you into buying a certain wine. Instead, they should be asking you what you like."
