It’s part of a campaign that aims to make leaving on the dot the norm, not the exception.

Today's a landmark day - and not just because it's the longest of the year. Friday, 21st June marks National Go Home On Time Day.

The special date's part of a campaign raising awareness of our work-life balance... or lack of it.

In the UK, we work some of the longest hours in Europe, clocking up £31 billion worth of unpaid overtime annually, according to the TUC.

Full-time employees in Britain worked an average of 42 hours a week in 2018, nearly two hours more than the EU average.

The campaign's been masterminded by Working Families, a charity that helps working parents and carers - and their employers - find a better balance between responsibilities at home and in the workplace.

"Our aim is for going home on time to be the norm, not the exception. Making work-life balance a priority and having widespread, genuinely flexible human-sized jobs will deliver benefits for both businesses and all workers," explains the charity's CEO Jane Van Zyl.

"Working people who are burnt out and disengaged are not going to perform as well - which is bad for business, bad for the economy, and perhaps most crucially, bad for families.

"Go Home on Time Day is a chance for working people across the UK to unplug and spend time with loved ones. And it's an opportunity for employers to consider what improvements they can make to their workplace culture to support their employees' wellbeing."

UK regulations state you can't work more than 48 hours a week on average although there are exceptions to the rule.

Your boss can also ask you to 'opt out' of the regulation although you can't be sacked or treated unfairly if you refuse to do so.

The nation-wide celebration isn't the only reason workers have to smile today. It's a double whammy with National Bring Your Dog To Work Day, too. Roll on 5pm!
