Supermarkets often replace items which are unavailable or out of stock with other products, but they can often be a little eyebrow raising to say the least.

But one Twitter user's supermarket swap is truly next level, as she received a bottle of HP sauce instead of cranberry sauce to accompany her turkey on Christmas day.

Her revelation sparked other shoppers on social media to share their own hilarious substitutes they've received in their online shop.

Taking to Twitter, original poster Clare Brown wrote: "I've just seen my substitution list for my shopping delivery. ARE YOU DRUNK!!!???

"Ordered cranberry sauce substituted with HP sauce. HP sauce people, the perfect accompaniment for turkey."

Twitter users then decided to share their substitutions and we're glad we aren't going to theirs for Christmas dinner.

One shopper revealed that their tin of Quality Streets had been substituted for a bath mat.

They wrote: "Luck you. My family have to munch on a bath mat."- yum.

Another shopper ordered oranges and was sent Terry's chocolate oranges (which seems like a better deal to us).

A third added: "Lemon juice substitute - lemon wipes... Oh the kids had fun wiping down pancakes before tucking in."

One family was left to tuck into a vanilla candle after it was deemed as a suitable substitute for a toffee pecan roulade.

Another shopper wrote: "I managed to have apples substituted with apple scented bleach. That'll make a memorable crumble."

Somebody else revealed they had received tampons instead of cotton buds, and another received a cauliflower instead of a bottle of vodka.
