Bertha The Obese Chihuahua Lost Half Her Body Weight And Now She Looks STUNNING

This good girl and once-obese chihuahua, Bertha, has beaten the bulge with her new healthy diet and shed more than half her body weight after ditching unhealthy, indulgent food.

When her first owner passed away and little Bertha was passed to Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in San Francisco, the 11-year-old tipped the scales at 13 pounds (an average chihuahua weighs only six pounds). And her ageing little legs could barely handle the excess weight she was carrying. Her life looked like it could be in danger.

Luckily Allison Hackett, 35, found and adopted her in August 2017. She knew that she could help Bertha slim down and lead a happier, healthier life with the help of a calorie-controlled diet.

Allison had to train Bertha's fussy palette to enjoy new low-calorie and low-carb dog foods and healthier treats of carrot and apple.

Since embarking on her journey to health with Allison, Bertha has shed eight pounds - that's more than half her body weight.

"She was unable to move well and she was definitely hindered by her weight," Allison, a mergers and acquisitions associate, explained. "She looked like a sausage. My friend said she looked like a loaf of bread on tiny legs.

"She didn't have a history so there was no evidence of what her diet had been like before but it was clear that it was bad. She lost about a pound during her time in Muttville, so when I got her she was 12 pounds.

"We wanted her to lose weight slowly and healthily," Allison explained. "She would have a quarter of a cup of this food a day in total. She reached 5 pounds about a year into her diet and her vet is super happy with her at the moment."

The focus had to be on her diet because senior dog, Bertha, has a condition which causes regular seizures meaning she can't go too hard when it comes to exercise.

But the chihuahua loves to run around the house and climb the stairs, which she wasn't able to do when she was bigger.

"She is a much happier dog and is leading such a happy life now," Allison enthused.

"We're really strict about her diet. She's not allowed any people food or high-calorie treats. Now she can go up and down the stairs, she can stand on her hind legs, she can run around.

"She has so much energy now and it's so nice to hear the click of her toenails running around the house constantly especially when she could hardly move before."

Despite being a slimmer version of her former self, food is never far from Bertha's mind.

"She definitely loves her food. She is always looking for it, she is constantly on the lookout.

"I can tell she's always thinking about it, but she is happy and healthy now and everyone is pleased with her progress."
