Nicola McLean has explained why she decided not to take her husband's surname when she got married and how she thinks the tradition is 'outdated'.

She appeared on This Morning alongside journalist Dawn Neesom who believes that women should take their husband's surname to show their love for their partner.

After marrying her partner, Tom Williams, in 2009, Nicola explained that she kept her surname because she 'had worked hard to get where she is as a McLean'.

She also revealed that Tom felt strongly about the children having the same name as him, but having a surname different to her sons doesn't make her any less of a mum.

Nicola said: "Why should I be Williams? I'm a McLean. I've worked hard to get where I've got to today as a McLean.

"My husband's fine with it. My kids are fine with it. I just think it is outdated. It goes back to the 70s where the husband bought the house and it was the house name.

"I pay my way in my relationship so why doesn't Tom take my name?"

The model said that although she doesn't think any less of women who take their partners surname she doesn't know why it is seen as the thing to do.

She also continued to say that she is no less committed to her husband because she doesn't have the same last name.

Nicola said: "I am no less committed to my marriage than you. I have proved that I'm committed to my marriage. I love my kids, I love my husband but I love my name and I don't want to change that."

Social media users seemed to agree with Nicola and shared examples of men taking their wive's last name.

One user wrote: "My sister's husband took our surname! People always say she's so lucky her hubby had a 'cool' surname and actually he got the name Silver from us".

Another added: "My husband took my surname 26 years ago!! Our daughter had my surname and mine was just a better name now she is married she has double barrelled it with her husband's name, which I love [sic]!!"

A third user wrote: "I took my husband's surname, however kept mine as middle name and gave it as a middle name to all of my children [sic]!!"
