You'll never get more wild off a drink than you do when you get a few shots of tequila down you. However, there are probably very few of us who feel particularly healthy after enjoying too much tequila.
With that in mind, ironically, scientists have recently discovered that the plant from which tequila is derrived, blue agave (a kind of succulent that mostly grows in Mexico) is actually really good for bone development.
Science Daily reports that scientists at the Center for Research and Advanced Studies in Mexico have discovered that various substances within blue agave improve calcium and magnesium absorption in the body making our bones stronger.
The study looked at the results on mice with induced osteoporosis, a condition which causes weakness in bones, who were given fructans (fruit sugar) from blue agave. Those who were given the fructans showed a 50% increase in the protein that causes bone growth and had larger bones too.
It's hoped that the research will help find a cure for humans who are suffering from osteoporosis.
Research leader Dr. Mercedes López had this to say about the results from the lab: "the consumption of fructans contained in the agave, in collaboration with adequate intestinal micriobiota, promotes the formation of new bone, even with the presence of osteoporosis."
Unfortunately though, drinking more tequila shots isn't going to make your bones better. Fructans are the same thing that gets broken down to create alcohol when they're fermented so tequila as a drink has had all the benefits of the original plant form removed and replaced with party-juice!
