True Crime Drama 'Hatton Garden' Will Finally Air This Month
A new ITV drama will follow the story of the infamous Hatton Garden jewellery heist pulled off by a group of elderly burglars.
Hatton Garden is based on the events of April 2015, when four OAPs dubbed 'Dad' Army' managed to steal £14million worth of jewellery from a vault in central London.
The first installment in the four-part series will air on ITV on Monday 20th May 9pm, and the following episodes will air on consecutive nights that week.
Hatton Garden will show how the veteran criminals managed to drill through a 50cm thick vault wall to access £14 million worth of precious goods, in what was described the "largest burglary in English legal history."
The story will show how the men meticulously planned out the raid, and how they managed to carry it out over the bank holiday weekend in April four years ago.
It will also explore how police managed apprehend Brian Rader, Daniel 'Danny' Jones, John Kenneth 'Kenny' Collins, Terence 'Terry' Perkins, Michael 'Basil' Seed, William 'Billy The Fish' Lincoln, Hugh Doyle and Carl Wood, following a complicated and technical police investigation.
Terry Perkins is played by Timothy Spall, while Kenneth Cranham takes on the role of Brian Reader. Brian F O'Byrne plays Michael Seed, who was known as Basil, and Carl Wood is played by Geoff Bell.
The drama was originally intended for release in December 2017, but was postponed when Perkins went on to face further charges, to prevent the drama from impacting his trial.
Writer Jeff Pope told the Radio Times: "[Perkins] was charged with another robbery, completely unconnected to Hatton Garden and the trial was due, and if there had been a four-hour drama saying, 'Terry Perkins is a burglar,' then he wouldn't have been able to have a fair trial. So, we had to pull it."
The drama was then set for release the following year, but another setback meant it had to be pulled yet again. This was due to the capture of Michael Seed and following his guilty conviction in March, it was finally given the green light to be aired.
