This 'Bad Date' On New Netflix Series Is Uncomfortable To Watch For So Many Reasons

This 'Bad Date' On New Netflix Series Is Uncomfortable To Watch For So Many Reasons

Viewers of Netflix reality TV series Dating Around were left fuming over one of the dates after the programme hit the streaming giant on Valentine's Day.

The six episode show's premise isn't complex - it sees singletons matched with five potential love interests in NYC, with them choosing one who they'd like to see again at the end.

And the second episode centred on Gurki, a 36-year-old jewellery buyer for Barney's from Texas, with one of her matches including 34-year-old Justin who works in real estate.

Needless to say, blind dating is awkward and exhausting at the best of times, and Dating Around truly encapsulates the highs and the lows of these first encounters. But Gurki's date with Justin takes these lows to a whole other level, as he attacked her personal dating history and views on love.

Gurki revealed to all of her dates that she's divorced, having been with the same man from the age of 17 until aged 32.

She told of the pressures she felt to marry him at age 25 and explained that she didn't feel like he was 'The One'. Their marriage ended after he cheated on her and she was now starting over.

The jewellery buyer also said that her Sikh parents from Punjab, northern India had an arranged marriage, and although hers was not, she felt she grew up surrounded by a different dating culture to most others.

"It was a taboo for people to be dating and not have marriage as the end goal," explained Gurki. "So then you're like, 'Well, it seems kind of petty to not get married to this guy you have been dating'. But we weren't the best of ourselves with each other and I feel like when you're in a relationship you want to be the best of yourselves for each other."

While her dates were understanding about her feelings and thoughts, Justin was far from it. Their date resulted in a blowout argument, beginning when Justin declared that loving someone ultimately means that you let part of yourself go.

Gurki didn't agree with this sentiment, stating: "No, I think if you find the right person, you're not letting anything go."

Making reference to her two years in NYC compared to his 13, Justin sniped: "You haven't lived in New York long enough."

"I don't think you've been in love then," Gurki replied, before Justin cut in: 'I've definitely been in love."

Gurki disagreed, before her date interrupted her again by saying: "When you're in love, you put the other person first."

"Yeah, but that doesn't mean a part of you disappears," added Gurki.

"But how do you know?" asked Justin, before retorting: "You got divorced at 32."

Justin then hit out at Gurki further by questioning why she married she somebody she wasn't in love with (something she never actually said).

"Who says yes to getting married and you have doubts?" he declared, with Gurki defending herself by saying: "It's a very cultural thing to not understand societal pressure on getting married to somebody you've dated."

Justin then consistently interrupted Gurki, accusing her of 'lying' to a man and ruining eights years of her life (again something she never said).

Talking loudly over her, Justin said: "You totally ruined it. You lied to him and yourself. You agreed to spend the rest of your life with someone in front of friends and family and it was a complete lie. How can I ever trust you? How would anyone ever trust you?"

Obviously hurt by his words, Gurki looks upset prompting Justin to suggest that everyone else she dates in the future would think the same as him.

He said: "Look, I don't want you to be upset. If you're gonna go on a date and you're gonna talk to me or any guy in New York City, I feel like they'll ask the same questions, because you wanna know the true, honest answers. You wanna know somebody from their core. And if you can't handle that and are gonna get defensive..." before Gurki finally interrupts him back.

"Well, obviously, we're never gonna see each other again after this, so I'm trying to understand..." but before she has time to finish her sentence, Justin leaves.

Netflix shared the extra clip from their 'date' on Twitter, along with the caption: "Wanna watch a really bad date?" and a flurry of angry replies were shared by viewers of the show.

"And he had the nerve to tell her that she was being defensive!" exclaimed one.

While another added: "He kept interrupting her. He wasn't listening to understanding but to respond. He refused to listen to her at all. Wow!! No wonder he's still single."

"I agree, it was infuriating to watch this. I would have thrown my drink at him and walked away," shared somebody else.

Gurki chose not to see any of her dates again, and the episode instead ended with her smiling and walking through NYC on her own, with no need for a man like Justin in her life.
