The Walking Dead has announced when Andrew Lincoln will leave the long-running TV show, confirming what fans have known was coming for a while.

AMC wrote on social media that Rick Grimes' final scenes will take place in season nine episode five, which is just a couple of weeks away.

After season nine episode 'Warning Signs' came to an end, the programme's official Twitter account posted: "After this week Rick Grimes has TWO EPISODES LEFT. You don't want to miss a second of it."

The news comes after details of each episode were revealed last week except for the sixth episode, which fans took as a hint that Andrew would be leaving.

Walking Dead's synopsis for episode five read: "Rick is forced to face the past as he struggles to maintain the safety of the communities and protect the future he and Carl envisioned."

And episode seven was described as: "Carol seeks out an old friend living alone in a wilderness teeming with walkers; survivors make the perilous trek to a new home."

Andrew was cast as the show's protagonist back in 2010.

The character is a sheriff's deputy who wakes up from a coma in the middle of a zombie apocalypse and becomes the leader of a group of survivors, who are forced to fight off the monsters.

Earlier this year, it was reported that the ninth season of The Walking Dead would be Andrew's final season.

After the announcement, fans launched a petition to try and persuade the producers into keeping him in the show.

It read: "Sign this petition to encourage the creators behind the show and Lincoln himself to rethink the magnitude of the premature death of the character who has been set up to restore civilisation, law and order and to raise his daughter safely.

"Andrew Lincoln has poured his heart and soul into the show and if he feels it's time to bookend the characters story and have more time with his family, the creators behind the show should reconsider the timing of his departure and the effect his death will have on the shows overall arcs and other characters."

Actor Norman Reedus, who plays character Daryl Dixon, will take over the programme's lead after the actor's departure.
