Anne Hathaway has confirmed that a script has been written for Princess Diaries 3 - and that she and co-star Julie Andrews are both on board to appear in the sequel.

Princess Diaries - a teen coming-of-age comedy about an American girl who discovers she is heir to the throne of a European kingdom - was released in 2001 and a sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, came out in 2004.

Speaking on the chat show Watch What Happens Live, Hathaway, 36, emphasised just how much she wants the project, reportedly set in New York City, to go ahead.

"There is a script for the third movie. There is a script," the Oscar-winning actress said. "I want to do it. Julie [Andrews] wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen."

"It's just we don't want to unless it's perfect because we love it just as much as you guys love it," the Devil Wears Prada actress continued. "It's as important to us as it is to you, and we don't want to deliver anything until it's ready, but we're working on it."

Hathaway and Andrews are set to team up for a third film.

The third film, which has been rumoured for many years, comes after the 2016 death of original director Garry Marshall.

Julie Andrews, 83, earlier spoke about her own desire for third film and how they might honour the filmmaker.

"There's talk about it. And Ann Hathaway's very keen to do it. I would very willingly and happily do it," Andrews told Buzzfeed. "I think we might do it in honour of him (Garry Marshall). Annie had an idea that she wanted to pursue about it, and I'm all for it."

There's no release date yet for the film but we're hoping it won't be long.
