If you're still waking up in hot sweats months after finishing season 1 of Netflix's The Haunting Of Hill House then we're not sure you're quite ready for this latest piece of news - but we're going to tell you anyway.

Creator Mike Flanagan has just said that the second season is going to be way scarier than the first so it's probably time you dug that nightlight back out.

Season one brought the story of the unfortunate Crains to a satisfying conclusion, and topping its efforts was always going to take some doing.

But speaking to Birth.MoviesDeath about what viewers can expect from the second installment, Mike revealed that it will be "much scarier than season one", adding that he is "very excited about it."

Netflix has already announced that the new series will be called "The Haunting of Bly Manor", with the creator adding that it will take inspiration from Henry James' novella "Turn of the Screw".

"We're looking at all the ghost stories of Henry James as the jumping-off point for the season, so it very much is a whole new deal," he said.

"It's a cool way to expand on some of the things I have loved about Season 1, but within the framework of a new story, without having to be restrained by the decisions we made last time."

Adding: "For Henry James fans, it's going to be pretty wild, and for people who aren't familiar with his work, it's going to be unbelievably scary."

Can we get an EEK?

Fans will be delighted to see a bunch of familiar faces return to their screens, as a number of season 1's cast are back for more including Oliver Jackson-Cohen as a Bly Manor resident named Peter, and Victoria Pedretti as a governess named Dani.

"We're hanging the season on Victoria Pedretti and Oliver Jackson-Cohen, and in addition to them, there are going to be other familiar actors from season 1," he shared.

"Beyond that, I've got quite a few candidates among new faces who I really love, but we haven't formally cast anybody yet."

Season 1 received rave reviews when it was launched on Netflix last year, boasting a huge 93 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics calling it "by far the most complex and complete horror series of its time", so we have very high hopes for the second installment.

And while there's no date set for its release just yet, the new season is expected to return in 2020 so there's not too long to wait.
