We've been patiently waiting for Peaky Blinders to return to our screens - and finally the gritty period drama has released the first trailer for the upcoming fifth season.

The teaser, which was posted to BBC One's Twitter, shows the Birmingham gangsters in all their glory as they arrive in London in support of Thomas Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy) to take up his new post in Westminster as an MP.

It begins calm with Thomas narrating: "There is God, and then there are the Peaky Blinders. We own the ropes who's going to hang us now?"

But as expected, the teaser reveals their arrival to the big smoke is with its challenges as Thomas is faced with tough opposition by Oswald Mosley, leader of the British Union of Fascists (played by Sam Claflin).

And the drama doesn't end there as Aunt Polly (Helen McCrory) pulls the trigger on a gun while Thomas' sister Ada warns: "No one's going to hang you Tommy, you're going to hang yourself".

As the music and action comes to a crescendo, Thomas' dulcet Brummie tones say: "Sometimes, death is a kindness" while it appears everything the Shelbys have built is crashing down around them.

Sharing the post with excited fans, the caption read: "SERIES 5 TRAILER. "There's God, and there are the #PeakyBlinders". Coming soon to @bbcone".

Cillian will be joined by Paul Anderson, Sophie Rundle, Finn Cole, Kate Phillips and Natasha O'Keefe, who will all reprise their roles in the new series.

The official series five synopsis reads: "Series five of Steven Knight's crime family saga finds the world thrown into turmoil by the financial crash of 1929.

"Opportunity and misfortune are everywhere. When Tommy Shelby MP (Cillian Murphy) is approached by a charismatic politician with a bold vision for Britain, he realises that his response will affect not just his family's future but that of the entire nation."

Previously, showrunner Steven Knight confirmed that at least two more seasons of the show will be made as he spoke to reporters at the world premiere for the fifth season in July.
