There's A New Disabled Character In 'Peppa Pig' And Parents Are Overjoyed

With elephants, rabbits, questionable-looking ponies and, of course, pigs, the ' Peppa Pig' cast is certainly diverse in terms of its animal species.

But the newest character, Mandy Mouse, who's in a wheelchair, is set to take the show's diversity to the next level.

The new character was teased on the official ' Peppa Pig' twitter feed on Wednesday with the caption: "Squeak! Introducing the newest member of the playgroup, Mandy Mouse!"

There was also a sneak peak video of Mandy's introduction to the playgroup by Madam Gazelle who says: "Children today we have a visitor... Mandy Mouse." Mandy Mouse then confidently enters the room with her mum and says: "Hello Everyone, squeak." The class all say 'hello' back in chorus.

The 15-second clip has had hundreds of likes and shares but it was the comments of thrilled parents of parents with disabo that really proved the impact the the character will have.

One said: "My little girl has a wheelchair and she spotted this character in the "Peppa goes to London" book yesterday! Great that she's going to be a regular character."Another commented: "Oh this is so good. Well done! With love from a 29 year old wheelchair user who will now be watching Peppa Pig avidly."

A third enthused: "Yes disability finally represented on my sons favourite program well done he will be thrilled at the newest addition."

One response was highly emotional: " I could cry! My daughter loves peppa and has a neuromuscular disorder. This is a game changer. Thank you!!!!!!"

Some social-media users were keen to see further diversity within the Peppa Pig character bank to raise awareness. One mum tweeted: "Any chance we could have a character with food allergies (and something other than peanuts!)? Could even be an existing character! "
