A new adaptation of Richard Adams' Watership Down has finally been given an official release date by the BBC.

The highly anticipated miniseries will be here just in time for Christmas, as the Beeb has announced it will be airing on 22nd and 23rd December.

The 1978 classic film adaptation of the novel of the same name saw a colony of talking rabbits flee their doomed warren to find and defend a new home for themselves.

While the first flick was full of horrific details and disturbing imagery - despite it being a kids' movie - this live-action is thought to have been toned down in its gore.

The story will still stay true to the original in part though, as it will dive down the rabbit hole to follow the tale of Fiver the bunny, who has been haunted by post-apocalyptic visions predicting the warren's destruction.

Details surrounding the cast have previously been shared with fans, who can expect a star-studded line-up with big names.

Fiver will be voiced by X-Men's Nicholas Hault who is joined by his co-star James McAvoy, The Crown's Olivia Coleman, former Bond girl Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley, and Star Wars' John Boyega.

There's a whole host of other famous famous voicing the rabbits, too.

Matthew Read, BBC Drama Commissioning Editor, said: "Before there was Harry Potter there was Watership Down; Richard Adams' novel is one of the most successful books of all time and one of the biggest selling books in history.

"It is fantastic to have the opportunity to bring a modern classic to a mainstream BBC One audience with such an incredible roster of actors alongside the talented team overseeing the animation."

The four-part mini-series will air on BBC One on 22nd December. It will also air on Netflix so international viewers can watch, too.
