A brand new trailer for the upcoming series of Luther has just confirmed the return of a pretty major character.

The Beeb just released a short preview of Ruth Wilson as lovable villain Alice Morgan, who some fans believed was killed-off at the end of the last series and was a close friend of Luther - despite murdering her entire family.

"Look who's back in Luther," teased the BBC under a short 13 second-long trailer released on Wednesday. It added: "Someone's got unfinished business."

Alice appeared to be killed by another female killer, Megan Cantor (Laura Haddock), in the opening scenes of season four, but it looks like she is making a return from the dead.

Photos of season five's filming saw Alice holding up DCI John Luther (Idris Elba) with a gun, leading plenty of fans to believe she was returning in one of Luther's dreams or wasn't killed-off at all.

Ruth added to this speculation too, while speaking on the Empire podcast recently.

She teased fans with the return of her character, but confessed: "I might get shot if I say anything," before adding: "Maybe you can ask me later, I'll still answer with the same answers."

Alice's absence from the fourth season was mainly down to filming commitments Ruth had to award-winning drama The Affair, where she played Alison Lockhart.

The official synopsis for Luther season five also revealed the detective will be facing ghosts from his past.

It said: "As a series of monstrous killings becomes ever more audacious, Luther and new recruit DS Catherine Halliday are confounded by a tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an unspeakable horror.

"But even as the case brings him closer than ever to the nature of true evil, a reluctant Luther must also face the ghosts of his own past.

"Striding back into the line of fire, he must choose who to protect... and who to sacrifice.

"Whatever his next move, it will have devastating consequences for those around him - and change John Luther forever."

Luther season five will air on New Year's Day, with an hour-long episode dropping up until 4th January.
