Modern Family, the popular mockumentary sitcom about the lives of three generations of a family, has been running for almost ten years.

It'll return for its tenth and final season this month, and viewers are keen to find out any shreds of information on how it's going to wrap up a decade of laughs. As it turns out, ABC are planning to close out the show's run with plenty of tears.

Co-creator Christopher Lloyd told Entertainment Weekly that a "significant character on the series" will die this season. He said, "We do deal with a death, which is certainly a topic that families have to deal with, and on television, it's not easy to do because that's a heavy subject. But at the same time, it would seem unusual for a family not to go through it."

Naturally, Lloyd isn't revealing who the Grim Reaper is coming for, but he promises that the death "will be a moving event" and as it will happen mid-season, it will have "repercussions across several episodes."

He added that, "There is a significant change in the dynamics of the family that people maybe thought was going to happen at some point down the line that is happening sooner than expected." Whether or not this clue relates to this death is unclear, but what is clear is that fans won't just be crying from laughter this season.

Fans are unsure who the death will be, and the facts will likely be kept tightly under wraps until the tenth season premieres on September 26th. As far as theories go, some things are likely: if it's a significant character, as Lloyd says, then it's likely to be a family member, as there aren't really that many other major characters on the show.

And if it is, it's likely to be someone older, as striking down someone young tragically is not at all in fitting with the show's tone.

Which, naturally, only leaves Jay. Or DeDe. However, Phil and Claire have both had some health issues, so maybe it isn't completely out there that it could be one of them. Of course, those are just theories...we'll only find out for sure midway through this season.
