Is It Really THAT Cold in Mallorca? 'Love Island' Contestants Are Constantly Wrapped In Blankets

Fans have been left baffled by contestants' fondness for blankets. So much for that ‘long hot summer’...

With the disappointingly damp weather the UK has been dealing with this year, you'd think that every night between 9-10pm we'd be insanely jealous of the Love Island crew with their glorious sunny days and warm balmy nights.

Yet while the tension might be heating up in the villa right now, if the number of blankets gracing our screens is anything to go by, the weather isn't quite as scorching for contestants.

Home to the infamous villa, Mallorca is the largest Balearic Island and generally boasts typical Mediterranean weather - mild winters and hot, sunny summer months.

Yet this year it's been impossible to ignore the constant teeth-chattering, or the fact that both the boys (and sometimes girls) have been cosying up in jackets once the sun sets.

We've seen both Molly-Mae and Tommy offer their coats to Maura as she's stood shivering round the firepit (although we're pretty sure that was just one of her terrible pulling techniques for the former).

And in an interview this week, axed contestant Sherif blamed a cold for spending so much time alone in bed, saying: "The only reason I spent so much time in bed was because I was sick and had a runny nose."

And don't tell us you haven't noticed that a cosy fleece blanket appears to be both Amber and Yewanade's accessory of choice.

It's a stark contrast to last years' contestants, who were more than happy to strut about in their mini dresses and skirts into the early hours.

So the question is, is it really that cold in Mallorca?

While the sunshine island saw an unsettled May, the start of June was marked by unusually high temperatures and plenty of sunshine, reportedly between 10 and 15°C higher than normal.

It looks like the islanders haven't been quite so lucky for the remainder of the month though, with last week's average temperatures reaching just 22°C according to CustomWeather, and plummeting to a low of 15°C on Thursday. With a usual average of 28.6°C, we suppose it might feel a little chilly.

The contestants are in for a treat next week though, with temperatures expected to hit a high of 31°C in the day and low of 20°C at night on Tuesday 25th June, according to BBC Weather.

The bad weather hasn't gone unnoticed by eagle-eyed viewers too, who have been sharing their concerns on Twitter.

One wrote: "Look how cold everyone's been on this season of love island climate change is REAL people"

While another fan can totally relate: "Yewande, a perpetual cold body, forever draping herself in blankets when the sun set...I FELT that."

And according to last year's contestant Wes Nelson, if you do spot a Love Islander shivering in their swimwear in the corner there's a reason why.

Speaking to Capital Breakfast earlier this week, Wes claimed that Islanders aren't allowed to cover up during the day because they're constantly encouraged to show off their six packs and toned physiques for the cameras.

"I used to try to go out in a hoodie and heavily clothed in the morning because sometimes it is a bit chilly, but yeah, you'd have to take that off," he told hosts Roman Kemp, Vick Hope and Sonny Jay.

Poor huns. We would feel sorry for them, but then we just looked out the window...
