John Barrowman has addressed an injury in the jungle which left him hospitalised and threw his future on I'm A Celeb in jeopardy earlier this week.

The Doctor Who icon opened up to his fellow I'm A Celebrity campmates on Monday night, explaining what actually happened during his temporary hiatus that concerned fans.

John returned to the jungle wearing an orthopaedic boot, with his co-stars cheering to see him hop back into camp...

"I feel like Hopalong Cassidy," John joked as he arrived back.

Revealing the true extent of his injuries which initally left him crying out in pain, the TV star explained: "I went to hospital, it's a bad sprain, the whole side of my left ankle is swollen."

John was given a cane to help him walk around camp by jungle medics, although it is unclear whether he'll be able to take part in the dreaded Bushtucker Trials.

He continued: "There are things I can't do, I can't go down stairs but they've told me to walk on it as much as I can because the more I can walk on it the better it will be."

Showing his commitment to the show, John said: "I am back, I am glad to be back, I did not want to go.

"I would never have used this as an excuse or an option to leave because I would never give up on something like this."

John also seemed to be a fan of his new walking stick, adding: "My own custom made cane, it's beautiful, I love smelling wood!"

Viewers took to social media to share their joy that John was back down under.

"So thrilled John Barrowman returned to the #jungle. Would not be the same without him there. What a truly fabulous person [sic]!!" declared one over-the-moon fan.

"That is how you do it. Go John. You fall get back up and come back and carry on. Well done sir. You have my vote," shared a second.

However, others expressed concern for John's well-being in any future trials, with one worrying: "What happens if John Barrowman gets to celebrity cyclone and is unable to do it?!"

I'm A Celebrity continues at 9pm tonight.
