I'm A Celebrity's Nick Knowles has been criticised by viewers for making 'misogynistic' comments to Rita Simons.

The DIY SOS star has faced backlash after telling John Barrowman the girls would be 'a bit jumpier because of what time of the month' it is, with viewers even branding him a misogynist.

It came after camp chef, John, was making some rice for lunch when Rita realised he'd only put four portions on.

"That's not enough for 11 of us," she told the Bush Telegraph. "Everyone's too scared to speak up about it so I do it in a jokey passive aggressive way.

"God forbid we have some food to eat or if anyone is going to cook anything but it's only one person that's doing that and I can handle them."

Highlighting the issue, she asked the other campmates: "Hands up who wants more rice because I do, put your hands up if you want more, it's too much to squirrel away, and it's ridiculous."

Speaking to Emily Atack after the incident, she said: "Even if I looked like a tw*t I had to say something."

Following the dispute, Nick had a quiet word with John where he advised the actor to keep his thoughts to himself for the next few days.

"Remember the girls are going to be a bit jumpier because of what time of the month they told us it is," he told John. "We're going to have that for a couple of days with the girls."

John later agreed, adding: "Tensions are a little high today that's why I am just doing this" as he acted zipping his mouth shut.

While some viewers thought it was considerate of Nick to sympathise with the girls' menstruation, others were put off by his comments.

"Nick saying that has stopped him from reaching top 5," one viewer wrote, while another added: "Knew that Nick Knowles was too overly chivalrous to not be a misogynist #ImACeleb".

"OH MY GOD!!!!!!! NICK KNOWLES SHUT UR MOUTH!!!!! STOP TALKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #imaceleb" a third tweeted.

However, other viewers defended Nick and John, with one tweeting: "All the women having a go at Nick n John over the period comment, Rita and Fluer (sic) both said at the start if the episode they were gonna be in bad form cos of their periods!! #ImACeleb."
